Professor McCoubrey received degrees from Harvard, (B.A., 1947), the Ecole du Louvre, and the Institute of Fine Arts (Ph.D., 1957).  His teaching was awarded Penn’s Lindback Prize for Distinguished Teaching, and his research has earned him awards from the Fulbright Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Guggenheim Foundation.  He is a specialist of modern European art and architecture and has published widely on French painting of the nineteenth century and on English landscape painting.  His books include American Tradition in Painting (1963; rev. 1999); American Art 1700-1960: Sources and Documents (1965); and Al Held: Recent Paintings (1969).
