| Constantinople and Thessaloniki were the first and second cities of the Byzantine empire; and today Thessaloniki is the second only to Istanbul for the number of its preserved Byzantine monuments. This seminar considers meaningful similarities and differences between the two cities and their monuments through comparative case studies. While the main concern will be with the Early Christian and Byzantine periods, it will also take account of transformations made in the first century after the Ottoman Turkish conquests. |
