A. FOR WORK NOT YET COMPLETED (study abroad, summer work at other schools, etc.):
Aproval in advance is not given for courses that are part of programs unaffiliated with Penn. These must be reviewed in advance by the transfer credit officer, who will give provisional approval only. Please submit your school's transfer credit form and the History of Art Department's "Application for Provisional Transfer Credit." You may do so by dropping off the materials in the Jaffe Building office or during the transfer credit officer’s office hour. Office hours change each semester, so contact the transfer credit officer via e-mail or ask at the Jaffe Building front desk for more information. It is the student's responsibility to enroll only in courses that are as demanding as those at Penn and to bring back the documentation listed in the "Already Completed" section. Submit this to the Transfer Credit Officer for review in order to received full credit.
B. FOR WORK ALREADY COMPLETED (when you have returned from study elsewhere or if you have transferred to Penn):
In addition to your school's transfer credit form, you must supply the Transfer Credit Officer with : 1) the instructor's name, academic rank, and , if possible, highest degree; 2) a syllabus of the course, including a schedule, description of the required work, and reading list; and 3) all of your work (exams, papers, assignments). These materials and the transfer credit form may be collected after about one week from the "to be collected" mailbox in the History of Art Office.
C. CRITERIA FOR TRANSFER CREDIT EVALUATION:
All courses are considered on a case-by-case basis, but the following standards generally apply: instructors should hold the Ph.D. degree or its equivalent; courses in community colleges and evening or extension programs are usually not approved; "art appreciation" courses or other courses that remove art from its historical and cultural context are not approved; courses that do not require substantial written work are not approved.
D. PENN-AFFILIATED PROGRAMS:
Credit for courses taken in Penn-affiliated programs is usually guaranteed. You need only submit the special form for such courses to the Transfer Credi Officer, together with a syllabus, so that he or she may assign the appropriate course number |
